Chapter Thirteen

Jared

I stepped outside and around the back where the ATV awaited. Next to it stood Gabe. I hadn’t told her Gabe had brought it back. She seemed uncomfortable about the big man’s presence, so I’d thought she didn’t need to hear anything which made her feel that way when she should be recuperating so she—

What? So she could return home?

The thought saddened me. Not that I didn’t want her to get better, but the idea she’d leave… It didn’t sit well with me. Because if she returned to Oregon, she’d probably end up finding a mate there. Silver Peaks shifters tended to mate within their own ranks. I was surprised a beautiful shifter like her hadn’t already been snapped up.

“What’re you doing?” I asked Gabe. “I told David to bring the ATV.”

“Yeah. I ran into them there. Let them know I’d be helping you out.” Gabe planted himself in the passenger side. Adjusted his hat, then peered toward me. “You’re driving, right?”

“Yeah.” I threw Vix’s lunch into the back in a large rear rack open cargo container.

We rode in silence, traversing the flatlands. In the distance, the Iron Flats Mesa made a stark backdrop. A solitary wolf on top observed them. Even from this distance, I recognized Luke, watching over the herd, I was sure. That shifter loved those horses. At the foot of the mesa, another ATV with a curly-haired blonde was taking pictures of Rocco and his mares. She waved at me. I waved back, though the whole human thing made my wolf growl.

I noticed Gabe watching me and turned my attention back to the path. What was on the big man’s mind? Not long after, we were at Seeker’s Spot.

“You coming?” I jumped out and grabbed the bag of meat.

“I’m good.” Gabe stepped off the side-by-side and leaned against it.

Again, I was left questioning why the man wanted to ride with me. Was there something he wanted to say? I glanced back, but all I could see of Gabe’s face was his jawline. And it seemed to be relaxed, as though we were just two friends, out in the country, running an errand.

Frowning, I turned away. I needed to take care of Vix and get back to Darby. I didn’t like leaving her alone for long when she was injured. Not to mention, she seemed to have something on her mind, too.

Seems everyone around me’s got something on their brain.

I studied the spot where Darby had fallen. The last couple times I’d been up here to feed Vix while she was unconscious at Gabe’s cabin, I’d sat at the very spot we’d crash-landed and reflected on the events from that day. There was something mysterious about Darby. Some secret, of that I was sure. Could I get her to talk about it one day? Hopefully, before she decided to return back to Silver Peaks? I pushed the thoughts away and pushed myself toward the business of feeding the little mama fox and her kits.

I scaled the rocks swiftly and nimbly, my shifter skills enabling me to practically blur up the steep side.
